Executive Summary

The importance of English language cannot be denied in the cultural and social setting of Pakistan. A Pakistani student needs good reading, writing and oral skills pertaining to English language in order to find good jobs in the local and global market.  In order to meet the growing demands for good English language teachers and language training institutes,   a new English language teaching methodology is introduced through the “Adaptive English Language Teaching Tool” Project.

This project will be developed through collaboration of three organizations, whose names and roles are listed below:

  • National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences (FAST-NU), Lahore-- responsible for software development.

  • Institute of Education (IER) Punjab University, Lahore--responsible for developing the contents of teaching material.

  • National College of Arts (NCA), Lahore--responsible for developing multi-media content for presentation in the software.

The goal of this project is to develop a computer-aided language learning system for imparting English language skills to the students of class IX.  Teaching materials and lessons will be developed in light of the aims and objective set out in the “National Curriculum of Pakistan”, developed by the Ministry of Education, for Grade VI to Grade XII competency level.  The project proposes to develop English Language Teaching Software and tools using a multi-modal interface with examples and illustrations which are relevant to our local and cultural setting.  Also, to make this tool an effective medium of instruction, some of the examples and text will be in Urdu, which is a feature not present in most of the existing English language teaching software.  This tool will be based on the state of the art techniques in artificial intelligence and human computer interface for intelligent user modeling and profiling.

The goal of the project is to introduce a new medium of education in rural, semi-urban and urban areas of Pakistan.

The key benefits of this project are:

  • English language teaching tool software is for the benefit of school teachers and professionals of public schools in urban, semi-urban and rural areas of Pakistan who want to improve their functional English and also use it as a teaching tool for training and language skills development.

  • Students of the public schools can greatly benefit from this project to improve their English language skills.

  • It will impact the current method and modes of teaching being deployed in various public schools and institutes of Pakistan.

  • The software CDs of the English language teaching tools will be freely distributed through this project to various schools and institutes.  This project will therefore be one of the initial steps towards the enhancement of e-Learning in the schools and colleges of Pakistan.
